Schawk's "A World Worth Saving" Photography Competition Announces Winners
Des Plaines, IL, April 24, 2009
Schawk, Inc. (NYSE: SGK), a leading provider of brand point management services enabling companies of all sizes to connect their brands with consumers to create deeper brand affinity announced today the winners in its first annual “A World Worth Saving” photography competition among its employees.
First Place was awarded to Dave Walton from San Francisco, California for his work titled “Pfeiffer State Beach.” Dave works as an account executive in Schawk’s premedia business. In the words of the judges, “A split-second snapshot of Earth’s wonder, never to be repeated, yet captured in a specific moment with all the color, drama and movement that Mother Nature has to offer. This shot encapsulates Earth Day with a look that appears to turn the clock back to the birth of our great planet.”
Second Place was awarded to Mindy Chin from Penang, Malaysia for her work titled “Smiling Lee Ann.” Mindy works as a client service manager in Schawk’s premedia business. In the words of the judges, “A perfect depiction of humans’ life delights amidst our green planet. Two generations enjoy the bounty of all that is living, embracing innocence, happiness and positive energy, shot in a round, global-inspired composition.”
Third Place was awarded to Gary Csuk from Chicago, Illinois for his work titled “Abandoned Book.” Gary works as a photographer in Schawk’s retail marketing business. In the words of the judges, “Stillness equals power in this desolate depiction. A great symbolic view of overuse and finality with the discarded book that’s forgotten and left to grey.”

According to Tim Rose, vice president of strategic innovation initiatives at Schawk, “This competition was a way for Schawk to uniquely see the world through the eyes of our employees. The theme, ‘A World Worth Saving,’ proved inspirational, as the quality of the entries and the number of online viewings exceeded our expectations.”
Added Rose, “Appropriately enough in this day and age, the images captured by Schawk employees were taken using digital and conventional cameras, even a mobile phone. The subject matter ranged broadly from saving natural environments, to historic landmarks, to the world in general for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.”
The entries range from breathtaking majestic images of natural beauty to evidence of man’s careless relationship with the environment. Alternately, there are images depicting moments of wonder, joy, solitude, curiosity, whimsy and unexpected connections. Images of historic significance are recorded as counterpoints to images of what may become the history of tomorrow.
These talented photography enthusiasts have captured both everyday moments and deeply personal ones. And of course, those subjects which are closest to our hearts, children, beloved pets, and other human beings. The prose these photographers have written to accompany their
images is equally affecting and gives the viewer a small glimpse into what inspired each of these people to “preserve time” at a particular moment.
The panel of judges included Barry Seal of Anthem Worldwide, a Schawk Strategic Design Company, Miguel Sacarello of Schawk Retail Marketing and Ryan Sharratt of Schawk Premedia.
Entry requirements mandated that the photo had to be taken by a Schawk employee, entries were limited to one per person, the use of any image manipulation/retouching programs was prohibited, and the file size could not exceed 5 MG. Images were posted on Flickr to allow employees to view all entries.
The 181 entries were viewed on flickr.com more than 10,000 times.
